2024 SMCF Awarded Grants

SIERRA MADRE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

SMCF awarded the Sierra Madre Elementary School a grant of $590 to help purchase 8 light banner poles The poles with SMES banners will be located along Auburn Ave near the school parking lot, where families, neighbors, and other community members drive by.

SIERRA MADRE PIONEER CEMETARY ASSOCIATION

The Community Foundation distributed a grant of $2,250 to the Sierra Madre Pioneer Cemetary Association to help upgrade the Sierra Madre Cemetary’s security system.  A recent theft created the need to enhance their security, specifically additional cameras and vidieo equipment.

CITY OF SIERRA MADRE - HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS

The City of Sierra Madre received a grant of $1,500 for this year's Hallowing Happenings Event.  The funds will be used for decorations for the band shell in Memorial Park and to offset operational costs associated with the event, such as insurance and lighting and portable restrooms on Algeria Ave. on Halloween Night.

SIERRA MADRE CERT

The Sierra Madre Community Emergency Response Team (SM CERT) received a grant of $875 to help expand the Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network (AREDN) with three new portable radio nodes. This is part of the nationwide system which is capable of sending live video and other digital data to the city’s Emergency Operations Center through a mesh network from just about anywhere in the city. These three new “nodes” will allow quick setup with reliable standardized equipment. This work is done in cooperation with the Sierra Madre Emergency Communications Team which tests and practices with the equipment at a number of city events throughout the year.

SIERRA MADRE LIBRARY SUMMER SCIENCE PROGRAM

The Sierra Madre Public Library received a $1,400 grant to support its annual Summer Science Workshops program. Taught by local teacher Dany Richey, each workshop explores a distinct scientific theme. The program remains a cornerstone of the library’s educational offerings, fostering scientific curiosity and engagement within our community. 

SIERRA MADRE PUBLIC LIBRARY - BOOKMARK CONTEST

The Sierra Madre Library Foundation received a grant of $300 to help with the annual Bookmark Contest. This year’s theme is “Sierra Madre Stories”, asking participants to showcase people, places, or things that depict stories related to reading or literacy in Sierra Madre. The contest is for children in grades K through 8th who go to school in Sierra Madre, live in Sierra Madre, or who have a Sierra Madre Public Library card.

CREATIVE ARTS GROUP - IMAGINART PROGRAM

The Creative Arts Group was awarded a grant of $1,750 to support their ImaginArt Program. The goal of this program is to engage students in the learning process by adding a tactile and progressive-modeled dimension to their in-class study. Art has the power to encourage out-of-the-box thinking and enhance problem-solving skills. The “Face Pocket” project challenges students in a safe and nurturing environment to move beyond their comfort level, build their confidence by tackling increasingly complex projects, and capture their imagination to animate a key element of the aquatic world. This project also has the added benefit of being a conversation starter for families when they see their child’s interpretation of their ancestors.

SIERRA MADRE LIBRARY FOUNDATION

The Sierra Madre Library Foundation received a grant of $4,000 to help furnish the renovated library, when completed.

SIERRA MADRE PLAYHOUSE

The Sierra Madre Playhouse received a $5,000 grant to purchase and install a video monitoring system, part of its venue revitalization program.

SIERRA MADRE PUBLIC LIBRARY - ONE BOOK ONE CITY

The Sierra Madre Public Library received a grant in the amount of $1,000 to support its annual One Book One City series. The funds will be used to support a “Human Library” dinner event at the Hart Park House to celebrate this year’s book HumanKind.

CITY OF SIERRA MADRE - MT. WILSON TRAIL RACE KIDS FUN RUN

The City of Sierra Madre’s Mt. Wilson Trail Race received a grant of $1,500 to purchase T-shirts for its May 25 Kids’ Fun Run. The annual race, open to kids ages 3-13, begins immediately following the start of the Trail Race

2023 SMCF Awarded Grants

CANCER SUPPORT COMMUNITY GREATER SAN GABRIEL VALLEY

The Cancer Support Community Greater San Gabriel Valley (CSCSGV) was recently awarded $2,000 to relaunch their in-person “Wednesday Family Night”, which is comprised pf three free support groups and dinner for people impacted by cancer in Sierra Madre and the greater San Gabriel Valley.

SIERRA MADRE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - RAISED GARDEN BEDS 

The SMCF was able to provide a grant of $2,090 to Sierra Madre Elementary School to support their new Farm to Table Program.  The funds will be used to purchase 10 raised garden beds to allow expansion for 24 classes to plant, grow, and harvest their own food.

SIERRA MADRE ROSE FLOAT ASSOCIATION

The Sierra Madre Community Foundation is happy to provide a grant of $4,320  to upgrade old lighting and plumbing in the SMRFA Float Barn.  This will greatly improve  safety and reduce long term maintenance.  

CITY OF SIERRA MADRE - HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS

The City of Sierra Madre received a grant of $1,00 for this year's Hallowing Happenings Event.  The grant will help defray the operational costs of this year's event which includes Downtown Trick or Treating, a parade, costume contest,  lighting,  and mobile restrooms.

SIERRA MADRE SEARCH AND RESCUE TEAM - MOBLE COMMAND POST INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS.

The SMCF was able to provde a grant to the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team.  The grant will support modernizing their mobile command infrastructure for managing search and rescue operations.  SMSR increasingly relies on mobile data in the command post: satellite communications with field teams for areas with poor radio coverage, live personnel tracking, and search management mapping software.  All of these technologies help the team to effectively organize searches for lost hikers and ensure the safety of our rescue team volunteers.

SIERRA MADRE PUBLIC LIBRARY - WALK THIS WAY ADVENTURE

The  Sierra Madre Public Library received $1,500 to replace replace the hardware components including the metal frames, sandwich boards, and plastic page covers which were originally donated in 2020.

SIERRA MADRE PUBLIC LIBRARY - SUMMER SCIENCE WORKSHOPS

The  Sierra Madre Public Library received $1,400 for their Family Science Workshops program. 

CREATIVE ARTS GROUP - IMAGINART 2023-2024

The Sierra Madre Community Foundation awarded funds to the Creative Arts Group $1,825 to support this years ImaginArt Program.  The theme for Sierra Madre Middle School 5th graders is "Coral Seascapes.  This projects involves working with clay as well as discussion around the diversity of the natural world.

SIERRA MADRE PUBLIC LIBRARY - BOOKMARK CONTEST

The Sierra Madre Public Library received a grant to help this year's 2023 Bookmark Contest.  The theme this year is "Wonderrs of Reading" and will focus on the discovery and enjoyment of reading.  The contest runs from March 6th to April 13th with the awards ceremony held on April 25th.

CITY OF SIERRA MADRE - MT. WILSON TRAIL RACE KIDS FUN RUN

The Sierra Madre Community Foundation awarded $1,400 for the City of Sierra Madre -MWTR Kids Fun Run.  The run will be held on May 27, 2023 corresponding wth the Mt. Wilson Trail Race.  The funds will be used to pay for a T-shirt Design Art Contest and T-shirt printed with the winning design.  The shirts will be distributed to all participants on race day.
